Wepco's History

Wally Parmelee

Throughout its history, Wepco Plastics has always been rooted in rural Connecticut. The company has moved locations twice before finally finding its permanent home in Middlefield. This stable location has allowed Wepco to establish deep roots in the community and foster enduring relationships with customers and vendors. Many of these business partnerships have spanned decades, with some dating back to the early days when Wally first established the company.

As the years have passed, the torch of leadership has been passed from father to son. In 2023, Wally began the process of transitioning into retirement, entrusting the ownership of Wepco Plastics to his son, David. Alongside David, a long-time family friend, Charles Daniels, assumed the role of President. This seamless transition ensures that the values and principles established by Wally will continue to guide the company.

One of the core beliefs that Wepco Plastics holds dear is the importance of building strong relationships. This extends to customers and vendors, many of whom have become integral partners in the company’s success. Furthermore, Wepco strives to create an inclusive and nurturing environment for its team members, providing opportunities for growth and development.

Although Wepco may no longer employ as many family members as it once did, the company remains committed to preserving its small-family-owned business ethos. This commitment ensures that the personal touch and familial atmosphere established by Wally Parmelee continue to permeate the organization.
After nearly 45 years, Wepco Plastics remains devoted to the principles and values instilled by its founder. The company’s unwavering commitment to customer relationships, employee growth, and its small-family-owned business heritage is a testament to the enduring legacy of Wally Parmelee and the vision he brought to life.

As we continue to implement EOS, we have witnessed notable improvements in our organizational health and operational efficiency. Issues are proactively addressed, and our team is more focused and aligned on achieving our shared objectives. The EOS tools and concepts have empowered us to make data-driven decisions, optimize processes, and nurture a collaborative work environment. We remain committed to fully embracing and leveraging the EOS framework to drive sustainable growth and success at Wepco Plastics.

As a part of EOS, you must lay out a set of perimeters to guide you as you set our for your business to gain traction. This keeps the team accountable and goals that are visible to all. This is called The Vision/Traction Organizer.

As we enter our fourth year of implementing EOS at Wepco Plastics, our commitment to the system remains steadfast. Our leadership team continues to meet weekly for L10 meetings, where we tackle our most pressing issues and ensure that our actions align with our long-term vision. Additionally, our quarterly offsite meetings serve as pivotal moments to evaluate our progress, review our 90-day goals (referred to as “rocks”), and gauge the overall health of our business. These sessions enable us to celebrate successes, address challenges, and set new objectives for the upcoming quarter. At the end of each year, we conduct a thorough review of our performance and refine our strategic plan, incorporating lessons learned and adapting to evolving market dynamics. This consistent cycle of communication, goal setting, and strategic planning has fostered a culture of clarity and accountability within our organization. Amanda's Casino Hotspots

Must Have Eats

As I am sure you have heard, seen, or figured out by now, the hotel is located in the immediate vicinity of one of the world’s largest casinos, Mohegan Sun. Mohegan Sun is founded and run by the Mohegan Tribe and features over 40 restaurants, bars, and lounges, a 10,000-seat arena, 3 theaters, 2 nightclubs, 30 retail shops, and over 300,000 square feet of gambling space, including 6,400 slot machines and 350 table games.

This is going to be the closest place for you to get out and explore some. Even if you aren’t a gambler, there are plenty of things to do. The Hyatt does offer a shuttle, and there are Ubers and Lyfts available. I would suggest Uber, as they typically have more vehicles available.

If you drive, I would park in the Indian Summer garage. I typically drive up to the 6th level, slash the room, and take the far right elevator down. It’s usually plentiful for parking, and you are on the top floor, so it makes it easy to remember where your car is.

Tao is one of the newest additions to Mohegan Sun and boasts the most atmosphere of any restaurant at Mohegan. If you want to be dazzled by ambiance, this is the place for you! It’s a fun and vivacious dining experience, but not the best for intimate conversation. They have some unique drink specials, and the menu is a fusion rarity. They have sushi mixed along with raw bar items, steak, classic Americanized Asian dishes. This is a favorite in our house, and my sushi-loving teenager would suggest the Crunchy Spicy Yellowtail roll, my husband’s must-have starter is the Crackling Pork Belly Steamed Buns, and I keep mine a little more traditional Asian with the Pad Thai. It’s a classic but good and errs on the sweeter side. My suggestion is to always get drinks and many appetizers for the table, then save room to splurge on the Signature Dessert Platter.

You absolutely cannot beat a steak from Michael Jordan’s. If you are a sports fan or a good old #23 fan like I am, be sure to check this place out. From steak and seafood to a nice selection of wines, bourbons, and don’t forget my favorite, scotch, they’ve got you covered in white tablecloth fashion. My favorite dish is the Delmonico steak. If you are okay with splurging and a red meat fan, you won’t want to miss this.

This is my absolute favorite for a casual option. Bobby Flat’s burger bar! It is nothing fancy, but the burgers will blow you away!

You can get them brunch-style with an egg or “crunchified” with potato chips, or my favorite, “topless” made over a bed of lettuce instead of a bun. They will cook you a truly rare burger, and it is beyond amazing! This is usually my pick over all of the fancy places if we can get a seat at the bar. The bartenders are always a great time and create a fun atmosphere. You can also treat yourself to a spiked milkshake or frozen prickly pear margarita!

Mohegan Night Life

Now that we’ve established that I have clearly eaten my way around Mohegan Sun, let’s talk about how you can possibly fund all of that! If you are into gambling, make sure to save yourself a couple of bucks and use the ATM at the hotel. The casino ones are pricey! Also, sign up for a Momentum Card (their rewards program), even if you never plan on returning. Often times, they offer free slot play in $10 or $20 increments when you sign up. You’ll notice kiosks and customer service desks around the casino for you to sign up.

If you get hit with those late-night munchies, don’t worry. Krispy Kreme, Johnny Rockets, and Ben & Jerry’s all stay open until at least midnight, with Johnny Rocket’s staying open 24 hours.

Once you’ve got your card, it’s time to hit the tables or slots! If you are a table game fan and don’t mind a higher $10-$25 per hand buy-in, I’d check out the Earth Casino. They have everything from four-card poker to baccarat to blackjack and let it ride. You can usually find my husband at the let it ride table there. If you are more of a roulette or craps fan and looking for a lesser buy-in to learn to play, then check out the Sky Casino. They usually have $5 tables, and they have some single-play table machines where you can play blackjack or roulette almost like a slot machine.

If you love the slots, my favorites are over in the Sky Casino. There is everything you can imagine, and most of them start out as penny slots. If you are looking for me, find me at the Crazy Hearts machine by the poker bar!

Last but not least, if you are looking for some late-night fun, I’d check out Comix. If you are really brave, there is a billiards table to play or if you are more like me, you can grab a drink and hang out by the bar or dance floor to hear some good bands.

Jeff's Favorite Courses

Tunxis Country Club
Tunxis Country Club

My favorite golf course in CT, (2) separate 18-hole courses, along with a 9-hole course. If you have a choice between the green or white course, I prefer the white course. Depending on how many balls you carry in your bag, the white course has a lot less water to contend with and doesn’t end with a long par-3 that I usually need to take my driver out for and hope no one is looking. Great golf course to book an early 6:40 tee time so you have the rest of the day to recover on the couch.

Hunter Memorial Golf Course
Hunter Memorial Golf Course

Since my golf league is played here, it's a very familiar course with hole #1 starting with a test drive to see if you can hit your drive over a small stream (sometimes my beer muscles show their strength). Good luck, it will determine the rest of your round. Besides the long Hole 5 (par 5) with a nearby farm that sounds like the animals are laughing at me, it's a great course that over time they've done a fantastic job opening it up so you can hit from multiple fairways in case of a wicked slice.

Indian-Springs-Golf-Club
Indian Springs Golf Club

A challenging 9-hole, par 36 golf course that’s easiest enough to get a last-minute tee-time. Started taking my son here when he was little and now, he outdrives me by 100 yards at the age of 18. Watch out on hole 2 on the par-5 where you can hit it dead straight and not find your ball because everything funnels left. For you long hitters, challenge hole 9 with a downhill par-4 295 from the white tees…I’ve witnessed landing on the green in 1.

Charles' Select Breweries

Thomas Hooker Brewery
Thomas Hooker Brewery

Connecticut’s Capitol city, Hartford, offers multiple options. City Steam is one of the oldest and has a full restaurant, pool tables and a comedy club. Hooker Brewing is one of the largest brewers in the state and has a really cool taproom in the old Colt building. If you make your way over to Hog River, in the Parkville section of the city, make sure to visit Parkville Market. This food hall has more than a dozen options from Puerto Rican, Peruvian, Korean and more. Never had a bad meal here!

Urban Lodge
Urban Lodge

The town of Manchester has four breweries. Elicit has a huge taproom with lots of TVs, games and food options. The best part is they also have several guest taps featuring other CT breweries. I don’t care for most of their beers, so I exclusively order guest beers. Urban Lodge, on Main Street, however has terrific beers and a great space. While in Manchester, you may also want to try Pepe’s pizza, a satellite location of the world famous pizzeria, often voted best pizza in the USA. Definitely get the clam pizza. I always order twice as much as needed so I can take some home.

Coastline Brewery 2
Coastline Brewing

There are several spots along Connecticut’s coastline and if the weather is nice, a drive down Route 1 is a solid day. One of the breweries to try is Coastline Brewing in Westbrook. They have something for everyone. From New England style IPAs and Sours to Ciders and Hard Seltzers. Almost every town down there has one, or a winery though and many have live music. In Clinton, is Lobster Landing. They make one of the only lobster rolls ranked best in New England outside of Maine. Try it CT style, with butter!
